Whether you’re looking to completely remodel a kitchen or redecorate an office, there are a few simple tips that will help make any space look good.

1. Personalize

When creating a space, it’s easy to get drawn into the ever-changing trends. However, making a space uniquely yours will create more of a presence and be a reassuring place to reset.

There are no real rights or wrongs when it comes to designing your own space, it’s really just getting an eye for it. If you’re newer to designing your own space, taking a personalized spin on a trend is a perfect place to start. Try to incorporate your hobbies and interests into your space and pull inspiration from those areas to personalize your area.

2. Simplicity is Key

When designing a space, getting excited about many ideas and styles can be easy. There are ways to incorporate different designs into your space, however, if each is too bold or prominent then it can quickly feel cluttered and confused. Try to keep a general theme and tie in colors and themes with easily customizable items like throw pillows or wall decorations.

3. Harmonious Color Palette

Color is important, no matter the space. Brush up on your color theory if you want to get serious about your space. Simply put, some colors work better together than others. Colors like red, yellow, and orange are excellent bold accents whereas colors like white, black, brown, etc are the perfect neutrals to fill out bigger spaces.

Take some time to consider a bigger picture for your space and the colors that will be dominant. If you’re a bit nervous about color, stick with neutrals and add a bit of your favorite colors.

Bonus tip: if you’re struggling with picking colors for a space, pick a work of art like a tapestry, print, rug, or painting you like and build a space around that main piece’s color palette.

4. Transform the Old into the New

If you’re looking to update a space, especially if it’s a complete remodel, it’s easy to get a “Keeping Up With The Joneses” mentality. However, new and more expensive is not always better! Figure out the function of the space and what you want to accomplish with a remodel and base your decisions around that. If you’re not going to like that fancy standing desk but all your friends have one, skip it!

It’s easy to overlook old pieces when trying to update a space because you want a new look, right? However, if a piece of furniture for instance is still in good condition, consider a fresh coat of paint or repurposing it for a new function. You can also sometimes receive hand-me-down pieces from friends, family, or neighbors who no longer have use for an object and give it new life. Thrifting is also an option if no one in your personal circle is getting rid of anything. These upcycled pieces create a unique appeal to your space and help you save money and the planet!
