A great way to refresh a home is with rugs. Whether you live in a cozy space that’s perfect for layering rugs or a spacious abode, rugs can make or break a room.
The challenge is finding the correct size, color, pattern and texture to complement your room theme. Selecting the perfect rug can be a time-consuming, but when you hit the jack pot it’s a game changer! Here are a few tips!
CHOOSE ACCORDINGLY
Know what look you’re going for- Even if you’ve fallen hard for a rug, take a moment to be honest with yourself about the overall look and feel that you’re trying to achieve. If you usually gravitate toward traditional style but have fallen for bright orange zebra pattern, it could still work — but this rug may take your room in a more modern direction. If you want to complement the look you already have in your space, choose a rug that falls under the same design style.
SELECT THE RIGHT SIZE FOR FURNITURE ARRANGEMENT
The diagram below is a great visual of how to incorporate the correct size rug with your furniture arrangement.
- 8 X 10 and 9 x 12 Rugs– Notice, the standard setup has most, if not all furniture legs on the rug. The purpose of this setup is to define an area. It brings the surrounding furniture together in a cohesive way.
- 5 x 8 and 6 x 9 Rugs- As people are downsizing, 5×8 and 6×9 rugs are becoming extremely popular. In many instances, they work interchangeably and provide unique options. In a standard setup, the furniture starts to separate itself from the rug, especially in 5×8.
Know what’s on trend
Below are 7 rug styes that are popular and trending now:
NATURAL FIBERS
Natural fibers like sisal continues to be a trend in rugs, and we’re now seeing variations in woven and wool for a softer look and feel.
NEUTRAL HUES
The neutral palette has arrived! More earth-toned and neutral colors with monochromatic designs in patterns and textures are on trend.
MOROCCAN BENI OURAIN RUGS
Authentic Beni Ourain carpets come from Moroccan and have been handmade by tribes for generations. With the new influx in mid-century modern design, these rugs have gained popularity. These handwoven carpets are much plusher and softer than your average area rug. They are made from thick sheep wool and come mainly in cream and beige tones with geometric or abstract design patterns.
KILM & DHURRIE
Kilim rugs have long been at the front of design trends, originating from Turkey, North Africa, and the Balkans. A dhurrie rug is a handmade, flat-weave rug and is the Indian cousin of a Turkish kilim rug. Both styles are textural and colorful. These flat-weave rugs are bold, beautiful and timeless.
VINTAGE IS NEW AGAIN
Paired with more modern furniture, the traditional faded and worn-out rug style is in. However, this new fad doesn’t come with a cheap price tag. This may be the time to rescue grandma’s worn-out rug from your basement and give it a new lease on life.
BOLD CHEVRON PATTERNS
Chevron is a hugely popular rug pattern that packs a big punch. If you’ve been meaning to experiment with mixing prints, chevron looks fantastic with nearly every pattern…let your imagination run wild.
MODERN COWHIDE
Cowhide rugs are natural, classic and timeless. They can be incorporated in transitional, modern or traditional design styles. These hides are very versatile and come in different shapes, sizes, patterns, and colors. They look terrific layered and add a sense of whimsy, drama and adventure to a space.
